Bird Studies: Pygmy Falcon

I find falcons fascinating, especially these African fluffy guys. They are the perfect combination of speed, astuteness, and beauty.

Interesting facts about the pygmy falcon:

  • It lives in Eastern and Southern Africa.

  • It’s the smallest bird of prey on the continent (only 19 to 20 cm long).

  • Its diet is based on large insects, small reptiles, rodents, and also birds. (Hunting birds hunting birds)

  • Its plumage color is beautiful. Males have a solid grey back, while females have a chestnut brown patch between their wings. Both have white spots on their backs and tail.

  • It’s a “nest pirate”, which means it occupies the nesting structures of other species to lay its eggs. It has that level of coolness (and laziness).

  • This mighty killer is cute. Because of their small size, even adults look like babies.

Cute + Tiny + Killer = Deadly combo.
